North Burnaby Beach Walk

June 23, 2010

Time: 10:00AM–12:30PM

The next SFURA walk is along the Burrard Inlet shoreline in North Burnaby, between the foot of Penzance Drive and the foot of Cliff Avenue, on Wednesday, June 23 at 10:00 AM. Dave Huntley will lead the walk, which is rated Easy to Moderate and will take about 2 hours.

Driving directions:
We will meet at the north end of Penzance Drive by the railway tracks. To find Penzance take Willingdon Avenue north from Hastings Street, take the last turn right (east) and follow Penzance all the way to the end. You will find parking there. We will meet at 10:00 AM. Please be on time, because the tide will change and we must complete the walk before the water level becomes too high.
The route we will walk:
We will walk east along the track on the north side of the railway tracks; it turns into a trail and after about 12 minutes we arrive at the beach. We will walk on the beach to the north end of Cliff Avenue where the Trans Mountain dock is. We will return along the beach, but then take the trail north around the Port Authority property to the starting point. There is a nice viewpoint and sitting place on the way.

Then we will walk west along the beach as far as the Chevron oil leakage site where we should find a Chevron employee enjoying the sunshine. See Province's webpage. Then we will return to the cars. Time will be about 2 hours. A walking stick is highly recommended.

The beach is squishy in spots and at times there are barnacle-covered rocks. Running shoes are not recommended. Hiking boots will be good, particularly for those who are agility-challenged. Lightweight hiking shoes are adequate. There are spots on the trails where one will be brushing lightly against vegetation. Most of the trails will be suitable for umbrellas. This walk is timed for a suitable very low tide.
If you have questions, you can email Dave Huntley.
