Walk Along Sasamat Lake and Woodhaven Swamp, Port Moody

August 11, 2010

Time: 10:00AM–12:00PM

The next SFURA walk is along Sasamat Lake and Woodhaven Swamp Wednesday, August 11. We will meet in parking lot F at White Pine Beach at 10:00 a.m. Shirley and Ted Cohn will lead the walk.

The walk will take about 2 to 2½ hours and is easy/moderate. The trail is wide and easy to walk on, but there are some hills and some climbing is involved.

If the weather is good, bring a picnic lunch. And for those who wish, there is a nice sand beach for swimming at Sasamat Lake after the walk.

Driving directions:

Go east on Barnett Highway (Highway 7A) [north side of Burnaby Mountain] or north on Clarke Road [east side of Burnaby Mountain] to St. Johns Street [the main street in Port Moody]. Go east on St. Johns Street through Port Moody to Ioco Road, which is just east of Port Moody. Turn left onto Ioco Road and drive northwest, following signs for Belcarra. Take Ioco Road almost to the end, and turn right on 1st Avenue in the community of Ioco. Then turn left at the next fork onto Bedwell Bay Road, and shortly after that, turn right for White Pine Beach. We will meet in parking lot F at White Pine Beach at 10:00 a.m.

The route we will walk:

We walk down to the main beach and turn right past the building at its north end, where the trail starts off into the trees on the lake's edge. Quite soon we reach an access road where we turn left to meet the approach to the Sasamat Outdoor Centre. After crossing the outlet by the Sasamat Centre, we turn right and follow Windermere Creek downstream for about 200 meters, then we rise to road level at the Belcarra Village welcome sign, where we take the crosswalk to a flight of stairs. We go up a trail between private properties, walk around the side of a bluff to a road directly across from Woodhaven Swamp, and then walk around the swamp and return to Sasamat Lake. If we so decide, we can then walk around Sasamat Lake. On the route around the lake there is a floating bridge and several small feeder bridges, and a good view of the mountains.

If you have questions, you can email Ted Cohn.
