Walk Along Jug Island Beach Trail, Port Moody

August 25, 2010

Time: 10:00AM–12:00PM

The next SFURA walk will be in Belcarra Park, north to a point opposite Jug Island, on Wednesday, August 25 at 10 AM. Beth Odynsky will lead the walk. The walk is rated E (Easy). Lightweight hiking boots are recommended. We will eat lunch back at the picnic area near the parking lot, after the walk.

Driving directions:

Drive along the Barnet Highway (St. Johns Street, in Port Moody) to Ioco Road (there is an Esso station at this intersection) and turn north. At the third traffic light, Ioco Road turns left; follow it to 1st Avenue and turn right. Less than 1 km later, at a fork, turn left onto Bedwell Bay Road. Follow the signs for the Belcarra Picnic area. You will soon be driving generally west. Pass the turnoff to the right for White Pine Beach, and at the next fork go left. Stay on Tum-tumay-whueton Drive, avoiding the next left turn which would take you to the Burrard Thermal Plant, and continue driving through a yellow gate, to the parking area. We will meet at the end of the parking lot furthest from the washrooms (and nearest to the trailhead). There are also toilets which can be used when we get to Jug Island Beach.

The route we will walk:

The route is in the opposite direction from the one we took to Burns Point July 7. It goes past the picnic area, crosses Bedwell Bay Road, and continues north along the Jug Island Beach Trail. There is a viewpoint partway along the trail; then the trail drops down to the beach with Jug Island nearby. The walk is fairly short, so if the group wishes, on our return just before we re-cross Bedwell Bay Road we can detour along a side trail which has two branches, one north and the other south and then east, with both branches along Bedwell Bay.
