Walk on Trans-Canada Trail in North Burnaby
Time: 10:00AM–12:30PM
The next SFURA walk is on Wednesday, April 28, at 10 AM on the Trans-Canada Trail in North Burnaby. Dave Huntley will lead the walk, which is rated Easy/Moderate. It will take about 2½ hours.
Direction to the meeting spot:
We will meet at the northeast corner of Fell Avenue and Hastings Street, 400 m east of Holdom Avenue and 400 m west of Kensington Street. Park on Fell Avenue just north of Hastings. There is a bus stop near the intersection. Note: There is construction work along Hastings between Boundary and Cassiar. If you are driving to the Fell/Hastings intersection from the west, do not enter Hastings anywhere west of Gilmore. Instead use Parker Street, First Avenue, or the Lougheed Highway. East of Gilmore, there is no problem along Hastings. Driving from the North Shore via the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge, stay on Route 1 through the tunnel, exit at First Avenue, continue east on it until it dead-ends at Gilmore. Turn left (north) and go to Hastings where you then turn right (east). Do not turn north from First Avenue along Boundary to Hastings, because of gridlock on Hastings at Boundary.
The route we will walk:
We will walk east on the north side of Hastings for about 100 m to the start of the trail. The trail is somewhat hilly and goes to Penzance, which is northwest of Capitol Hill. (At this point if the group desires, we can take a side trip down to a beach on Burrard Inlet, and back.) The route proceeds along Penzance to Willingdon, turns north along Willingdon, and then goes diagonally northwest to McGill Park, proceeding along the north side of the park. It carries on under the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge and continues to New Brighton Park.
Special note: Several cars, left at New Brighton Park in advance, will take participants back to the starting point.
Afterwards, those who wish will go to Café Classico for lunch. It is at the northwest corner of Hastings and Madison (two blocks west of Willingdon).
Washrooms are available in Confederation Park, a short detour south of the Penzance portion of our route. The ones at New Brighton Park will probably be closed.
