Walk on Baden Powell Trail

April 21, 2010

Time: 10:00AM–12:30PM

The next SFURA walk is on part of the Baden Powell Trail in North Vancouver on Wednesday, April 21. We will meet at 10:00 a.m., and Ted Cohn will lead the walk.

Direction to the meeting spot:
From the east:
You will want to travel north over the Iron Workers Memorial (Second Narrows) Bridge.

NOTE: David Ryeburn recommends that you do not use Hastings, but instead get on the freeway at the First Avenue on-ramp or further east than that. There is construction on Hastings around Boundary/Cassiar.

Shortly after the bridge there are several exits. Take the Lillooet/Mount Seymour Parkway exit and veer towards the right so you can get on Mount Seymour Parkway. Then travel East on Mount Seymour Parkway a good distance until you reach Mount Seymour Road. Take Mount Seymour Road to the left going North. (Do not take Roche Point Drive which is to the right.) Travel a short distance on Mount Seymour Road as it veers left, and shortly after a sign for Mount Seymour turn left on the road towards Northlands golf course. Immediately after you turn onto this road, you can park either in the parking lot on the road or on the side of the road. We will meet at the parking lot on the right at 10:00 am. This is adjacent to where the hiking trails begin.

From the west:
Cross Lions Gate bridge and travel East on the upper levels highway. As you approach the Second Narrows bridge, get off at the Lillooet/Mount Seymour Parkway exit, and veer to the right so you can get on Mount Seymour Parkway going East. Then follow the directions above (same as for those coming from the East).

The route we will walk:
We begin by walking north on the Old Buck Trail for about 35 minutes. It is a beautiful trail with tall trees, streams, and bridges. The trail is wide and easy to walk on, but there is an elevation gain. The trail is never steep, but the elevation gain is persistent. After about 25 minutes we turn right (east) onto the Baden Powell Trail going towards Deep Cove. This trail goes mainly downhill through a forested area. If the weather is good, bring your lunch and we will eat either in a picnic area along the way, or at a beautiful lookout point (if we get that far). If the weather is not good, the trail is umbrella compatible and we can eat lunch at the informal restaurant at the Northlands golf course when we return. The walk will take about 2½ hours.

Ted rates this walk as Easy in terms of the condition of the trail, which is quite wide and easy to walk on. In terms of the elevation gain, he rates the walk as Easy/Moderate. The entire walk is umbrella compatible.
If you have questions, you can email Ted Cohn. or contact him on his cellphone on the morning of the walk at 778-868-3720.
