Richmond West Dyke Trail Walk
Time: 10:00AM–12:30PM
The next SFURA Walking Group walk — the Richmond West Dyke Trail — will be on Wednesday, November 4 at 10:00 a.m. Ted Cohn will be leading the walk.
Driving directions:
Drive south on Highway 99 through Richmond to Steveston Highway (Exit 32). Turn right onto Steveston Highway (Exit 32). Drive west on Steveston Highway beyond No. 1 Road almost to the end. Turn left off Steveston Highway onto 7th Avenue. Go south on 7th Avenue to Chatham Street, where a right turn leads to parking in Garry Point Park. We will meet near the restrooms beside the parking lot.
The route we will walk:
This is an easy, level walk along the Richmond Dykes, where you can take an umbrella if it is raining. It is a good time of year to see migrating snow geese and other waterfowl. So bring binoculars if you choose. We will pass a lagoon, and then head northward along the West Dyke Trail. After passing a townhouse development and a farm, we will pass the rich tidal marshes of Sturgeon Bank, with its abundance of birds. Depending on how far we decide to walk, we may also go to the Terra Nova park area. The walk will be about 2 to 2½ hours. Steveston has a number of informal restaurants if you want to eat lunch there afterwards.
If you have questions, you can contact Ted Cohn by email.
