Brunnette River Walk

November 18, 2009

Time: 10:00AM–12:30PM

The next SFURA walk will be along the Brunette River, on Wednesday, November 18 at 10:00 a.m. Ted Cohn will lead this walk.

Driving directions:

From the west: Drive east on Lougheed Highway to Bainbridge Avenue. Turn south on Bainbridge to Winston Street, then east on Winston to Piper Avenue, and south on Piper across the railway tracks to the Burnaby Lake Nature House.

From the east: Drive west on Lougheed to Government Street, continue west on Government which becomes Winston Street, to Piper Avenue, then south on Piper across the railway tracks to the Burnaby Lake Nature House.

There should be parking just north of the Nature House. On the slight chance that it's full, you can park at Warner Loat Park just north of the railroad tracks.

The route we will walk:

We will walk east along the Brunette Headwaters Trail portion of the Burnaby Lake Trail, taking the Conifer and Spruce loops (so that portion of the walk will be slightly different from the Burnaby Lake Trail walk we took earlier this Fall). Just before the bridge across the outlet of Burnaby Lake into the Brunette River, we will leave the Burnaby Lake Trail and walk along short road sections until we pick up the trail along the north bank of the Brunette River, which we can follow as far as North Road and Hume Park in New Westminster. The return route is the same, except that we will stay on the Brunette Headwaters Trail portion of the Burnaby Lake Trail instead of Conifer and Spruce Loops.

Washrooms or porta-potties are available at the Nature House, a few hundred metres further along the Burnaby Lake Trail on the other side of the outlet dam, and possibly at Hume Park. If visibility is good, at the end of the walk some may wish to go out to the end of Piper Spit or to ascend the new viewing tower just to its west (which replaced a wooden one about a year ago). If the weather is good and you want to bring lunch, there are picnic tables in several locations along this walk.

All portions of the route are easy walking (runners[note] are fine), and umbrellas will be OK if it is raining. The walk will be about 2 to 2½ hours.
