walk
Trans-Canada Trail (behind Capitol Hill)
Time: 10:00AM–12:30PM
Dave Huntley (or Dave Ryeburn) will lead the walk. This walk is rated Easy/Moderate.
Driving and bus directions:
We will meet Southeast of Capitol Hill in Burnaby, at the Northeast corner of Fell and Hastings. Fell is 400m east of Holdom and 400m west of Kensington. Both streets have traffic lights at their intersections with Hastings. So does Fell, but that one is always green unless a pedestrian actuates the crosswalk light to cross Hastings at Fell. Park on Fell just North of Hastings. There is a bus stop near the intersection if anyone wishes to come by bus.
The route we will walk:
We will walk east on the north side of Hastings for about 100m to the start of the trail. The trail – short portions of which are occasionally along streets – works its way to the north side of Capitol Hill, then gains and later loses a bit of altitude. It comes out on Penzance, northwest of Capitol Hill. (At this point if the group desires, we can take a side trip down to a beach on Burrard Inlet, and back.) The route proceeds along Penzance as far as Willingdon, turns north along Willingdon for a bit, and then goes diagonally more or less northwest to McGill Park, proceeding along the North side of the park. It carries on under the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge and continues to New Brighton Park where, if we wish, we can walk around the park.
Special note: The plan is to leave one car at New Brighton Park, in advance, to take drivers back to the starting point. If there are more drivers than can fit in this car, we can take some of them up to Hastings Street where they can catch a 135 bus.
Lunch: Afterwards, for those who wish, we could go to Café Classico for lunch. It is at the Northwest corner of Hastings and Madison (two blocks West of Willingdon).
Washrooms: Washrooms are available in Confederation Park, a short detour south of the Penzance portion of our route.
