15-minute neighbourhoods in Surrey

The concept of the 15-minute neighbourhood has undeniably captured the public's attention in recent years. In the context of Surrey – a city that has been historically characterized by automobile-centricity – this concept presents unique opportunities to reimagine the city’s future, as the city moves ahead with land use and transportation planning amid high population growth, the climate crises, and rising inequities.

From July to September 2023, the REACH-Cities team engaged with 102 Surrey residents, encompassing diverse and historically marginalized groups including refugees, newcomers, youth, older adults, low-income single mothers, urban Indigenous, and queer communities.

This report highlights experiences and perspectives of Surrey's residents, such as exploring their relationship with walking and public transit, the challenges they currently face getting around their city, and their aspirations for more connected and equitable neighbourhoods.

We are currently in the process of sharing this report with organizations and community groups in Surrey, such as DIVERSEcity, Surrey Libraries, and United Way. If you would like a presentation or workshop on our work, please reach out to Aman Chandi at achandi@sfu.ca.
