Michael Plunkett Wins Outreach Award

Michael Plunkett, an undergraduate student in the Mathematical Physics Honours program minoring in computing science, is the winner of the SFU Faculty of Science Outreach Award.

Michael’s commitment to science outreach extends throughout SFU’s Faculty of Science and into the greater community. At SFU, Michael has volunteered at Discover Physics, Science Rendezvous, Science Spooktacular, and the annual Physics Pizza Party in support of the adopt-a-physicist program. Michael is also actively involved in high school outreach efforts. For the past two years, Michael has given presentations about studying physics at a local secondary school and even presented at the BC Association of Physics Teachers Professional Development Event, sharing his experience as an undergraduate physics student.

Michael is also an active member in both the Math Student Union and Physics Student Association where he has taken on various roles such as treasurer and secretary. Furthermore, he has been an active member in both the Math and Physics’ departments EDI initiatives.

The Department of Physics is honoured to have a student like Michael in our department. There is no doubt that he has had a meaningful impact on his fellow students, our department faculty and staff, aspiring high school students, SFU visitors, and so many more.
