From IT Services | Notice: Recent Malware Phishing Campaign
This email has been sent all faculty and staff. No response is required.
Good afternoon,
Another email phishing campaign targeting faculty, staff and some students has been reported to IT Security.
The scam with the subject line: “[Not Virus Scanned] RE: Re:” contains fragments of old SFU email threads from 2012 to try to increase the appearance of legitimacy, along with it being from a current SFU staff member (however the full email is not an SFU address). The message contained a malicious attachment which, if opened, could compromise a user’s system.
Please do not open the attachment or forward the message to people in the organization other than abuse@sfu.ca.
If you received a suspicious email attachment and opened the file, contact the IT service desk to initiate an incident response for your system.
As always, please be critical of emails you receive not coming from a known and trusted source that has attachments (in this instance, Microsoft Excel and/or zipped attachments). Ensure you review the full email addresses to confirm they are legitimate before opening any attachments.
For more information on how to identify and avoid these emails, visit the IT Services Phishing Scams page.
Thank you,
IT Services
