What happened?

SFU IT Services is aware of a circulating phishing email from “SFU Support, Marcus Ong” indicating a “Covid-19 support fund payout” would be available. This is a phishing scam and IT Services is working to resolve as soon as possible.

Phishing is an attempt to acquire sensitive personal information, such as usernames, passwords and banking information by masquerading as a trustworthy party in an electronic communication. Phishing is typically carried out by email or instant messaging and often directs users to enter details at a website or in an email reply.

Who was impacted?

These emails are being sent to those with an SFU email account. This could include faculty, staff, students and/or alumni.

What steps should you take?

  • Delete the email without opening.
  • If you clicked the link within the email and got a reply, delete the message and block the email.
  • Report any other phishing scams to abuse@sfu.ca

SFU will never ask for personal or financial information via email, phone, text or social media.
