TSSU
TSSU strike action continues October 16
TSSU and the university, with the support of mediator Ken Saunders, have been working hard through the weekend to reach an agreement.
SFU and TSSU entered into non-binding mediation on October 13 and the university is hopeful that a fair agreement with TSSU can be reached through the mediation process with an independent mediator. In mediation, public communication from parties at the bargaining table is typically limited. Updates will continue to be available on the Collective Bargaining website.
The TSSU continues to hold an indefinite teaching work stoppage at all campus locations and has announced plans to picket at Burnaby campus on Monday, October 16.
The university has asked TSSU again to consider pausing the work stoppage and picket lines while the parties work towards an agreement through mediation. This would allow TSSU members to get paid and students and faculty to resume their regular learning and teaching activities. TSSU has not responded to this second request.
While the university will be open and accessible to those who wish to enter picketed buildings, there may be disruptions to scheduled activities due to strike action. Any campus-wide updates will be posted on sfu.ca and X (Twitter).
Picket line reminders and guidance
SFU has heard complaints from both SFU community members and TSSU members about picket line behaviour. The safety of our community members is our priority. We expect all within the SFU community and those who access our premises to make every effort to help us maintain our commitments to community safety and respectful conduct.
The right to respect a picket line is legal, as is the decision to enter a picketed building. You may be slowed down, but you cannot be physically stopped from entering a picketed building or parking on campus. If you have trouble entering a building, please contact your supervisor and consider completing a Strike Incident Report Form.
Your union may have a bylaw that applies to members with regards to pickets and job action. Please speak with your union representative for guidance if you have questions, and please stay connected with your supervisor or dean about your decision to respect or cross a picket line. You can also refer to SFU’s Bargaining and Strike FAQs and GP-05 – Strike Policy.
We recognize that strike action can put a strain on relationships between an employer and employees. Our focus remains on the academic success of our students, supporting our outstanding faculty and staff, and nurturing a thriving, world-class research environment.
