Following recent highly publicized cases of academic
dishonesty at SFU and other universities, the Vice-President Academic
established the Task Force on Academic Honesty and Integrity. In this
context, some people assume that we are mainly interested in student
plagiarism. Our concerns are more broadly based. We are interested
in all aspects of academic integrity and welcome comments or suggestions
on any issues relating to strengthening the culture of academic integrity
at SFU.
The terms of reference for the task force are the following:
- Examine current practices in the University for
informing students of the significance and meaning of academic
integrity, academic honesty and dishonesty, and the consequences
of violat ing policy in this area.
- Examine software and other computer-aided means
for detecting plagiarism.
- Examine processes and practices for ensuring that
examinations and assignments are conducted in a fair manner that
strikes an appropriate balance among security, fair play, and
cost.
- Consult widely within the SFU community.
- Recommend ways that practice, processes, and policy
with respect to enhancing academic honesty can be improved.
Task force members view the terms of reference
as directing us to identify a variety of ways in which Simon Fraser
University can encourage a culture of honesty and integrity among
students and instructors. We agree that students and faculty must
be encouraged and supported in their efforts to achieve this goal
and that the responsibility for strengthening and maintaining this
culture of integrity should be shared among faculty, students, administration,
and various units that support teaching and learning. |
