Sessional Instructor - BC College Pension Plan (BCCPP) Enrollment

Following your recent appointment with SFU, we include key information below regarding your pension benefit entitlement.

Under the terms of the TSSU Collective Agreement, all eligible SFU Sessional Instructors hired on or after the Fall 2024 semester will be enrolled in the BC College Pension Plan (BCCPP). The BCCPP is a multi-employer defined benefit plan, which is administered by the Pension Corporation of British Columbia.

You have been enrolled in the BCCPP effective on your payroll start date.  New members joining the BCCPP for the first time will receive a Welcome Package in the mail directly from BCCPP with plan membership information.  Exisiting BCCPP members can access their personal BCCPP details by logging in to MyAccount.

Note that if you are currently in receipt of a pension from the BCCPP, you cannot accumulate further benefits in the BCCPP.  Please notify pensions@sfu.ca if this is the case.

Pension benefits in the BCCPP are subject to plan rules which requires that employees and employers must contribute to the plan at a rate that is determined by the BCCPP Board.  Pension contributions are tax deductible.  Contribution rates are subject to change and can be found directly on the BCCPP website: How Pension Contributions Work.

Eligibility to Opt-out:

  • If you are already an active participant in the BCCPP (through prior employment at SFU or another employer), you cannot opt out of participation.
  • If you do not meet BCCPP’s definition of mandatory enrollment, you have the opportunity to opt out of joining the BCCPP at this time by submitting a completed waiver form within 30 days of your payroll start date.

Important Forms to Complete (required for each appointment):

1)      Declaration of Employment

Whether you wish to join the BCCPP at this time or not, please fill out and return the Declaration of Employment to pensions@sfu.ca within 30 days of your payroll start date.

*Please note:  For each new appointment, a new Declaration of Employment is required.

2)      (Optional) Waiver Form

If you do not wish to join the BCCPP at this time, please fill out and return the Waiver Form to pensions@sfu.ca within 30 days of your payroll start date.

*Please note:  The Waiver Form will only apply to your current appointment.  If you had previously submitted a Waiver Form for a prior appointment, you will still need to submit a new form in order to opt out of the BCCPP.  For each new appointment, a new Waiver Form is required.

Please note, if you decide not to join the BCCPP at this time:

  • Any pension plan contributions already deducted from your pay will be reimbursed to you.
  • You will be required to join the BCCPP if you become a full-time employee or if your earnings in a calendar year exceed the BCCPP’s annual earnings threshold, i.e., 50% of the Yearly Maximum Pensionable Earnings (YMPE) as defined under the Canada Pension Plan.
  • You may join the BCCPP at any time in the future; however, your participation will not be retroactive.
