REM 375 Ecology and Conservation of Coastal BC
Location: Burnaby Campus
Appointment Dates: January 8 to April 30, 2024
Lecture: Thursdays, 5:30 pm to 8:20 pm

Course Description: Investigates the ecosystems and environmental challenges of coastal British Columbia. Examines the major flora and fauna, fundamental ecological principles, anthropogenic drivers of change, and the role of applied science in conservation and management.

Qualifications:

1. A graduate degree or equivalent in natural sciences with specific experience in ecology or resource management. PhD in a related discipline complete or in progress preferred.
2. Teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
3. Experience teaching REM courses considered an asset.
4. Experience with or a broad knowledge of the natural history of coastal British Columbia, conservation biology, and natural resource management.

Qualifications: Strong background in a relevant discipline with a strong background in sustainable resource management theory. Should be familiar with commons problems, the Canadian economy, as well as environmental challenges in energy, industry and urban development in Canada, and institutional and legal issues pertaining to Canada's environment, including those relevant to First Nations.

REM 207 Indigenous Peoples and Resource Management – 1 TA position
Location: Burnaby Campus (In person)
Duration: January 8 to April 30, 2024

Qualifications:  Some previous coursework in Indigenous studies is a benefit, and a keen critical interest in Indigenous-Settler relations in Canada, reconciliation, and environmental issues.

REM 221 Systems Thinking and the Environment – 1 TA position
Location: Burnaby Campus (In person)
Duration: January 8 to April 30, 2024
Instructor: Brett van Poorten
Qualifications: Knowledge of concepts associated with systems thinking (e.g. stocks, flows, feedbacks) as applied to environmental and social systems, and awareness of how these concepts have been used to build complex environmental constructs, such as resilience and panarchy. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated application of skills through modelling. Experience with R and a systems software such as InsightMaker or Vensim an asset.

SD 281 Introduction to Sustainability – 1 TA position (marking support)

Qualifications: Knowledge of the following topics: challenges and opportunities for developing sustainable communities and a sustainable world, through the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); an understanding of strengths and weaknesses of conventional approaches to development and of sustainable development; emphasis on urban areas in the Global North and Global South; experience in leading tutorials and grading undergraduate courses; Background in Sustainable Development, Community Planning, and/or International Development preferred.
