Tell us a little about yourself, including what inspires you to learn and continue in your chosen field

I am a Master’s student in Dr. Tom Claydon’s lab in the Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology. What inspires me are the intricate ways living systems function, specifically the role of ion channels. Understanding how their malfunctions can lead to diseases is like cracking a secret code - one that could guide future treatments.

Why did you choose to come to SFU?

SFU's faculty, cutting-edge research, and vibrant community drew me back for another enriching academic experience after completing my Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.

How would you describe your research or your program to a family member?

I study membrane proteins, specifically a type of voltage-gated potassium channel, that regulate cellular excitability in the brain, and the mutations that result in deviating from normal function, such as epilepsy or intellectual disability.

How have your courses, RA-ships, TA-ships, or non-academic school experiences contributed to your academic and/or professional development?

My courses have provided a strong foundation of the field, while TA-ship and RA-ships have improved my communication and technical skills.

Have you been the recipient of any major or donor-funded awards? If so, please tell us which ones and a little about how the awards have impacted your studies and/or research

CIHR Canada Graduate Scholarships – Masters. This award allows me to fully dedicate myself to research in the field of ion channels.
