If you have an undergraduate degree in any discipline, at least two years of full-time professional work experience, and the motivation and self-discipline to learn business in an interactive online setting, the GDBA could be the best next step in your career.
It’s ideal for someone who wants to test business graduate level courses before fully committing to an MBA, and/or who wants the flexibility of an online program.
Or, if you’ve already decided you want to study for an MBA, the GDBA could be the pathway you’re looking for.
The GDBA can help prepare you for an MBA: it helps you build a stronger application for an MBA when taking the quantitative courses prior to the MBA, and you won’t have to take the GMAT if you want to climb the MBA ladder.
GDBA course credits can be applied to the MBA program of your choice - this spreads out the costs of taking an MBA and reduces your future workload as an MBA student.

We offer amazing opportunities for graduate research in many exciting areas
What type of financial support is offered for MSc Thesis and PhD Thesis programs? A: All graduate thesis students receive guaranteed funding while pursuing their degree. For more information, check our website.
The admission requirement speaks of needing a degree from “Computing Science or related field”. How are you defining “related fields”? A: We are intentionally vague about "related fields" as we want to have an open mind when evaluating eligible applicants. We would consider fields such as computer engineering, engineering science, computational mathematics, applied computing, applied mathematics, computer information systems, etc., to be more closely related to computer science than fields such as electrical engineering, civil engineering, or business administration. However, we still consider all applications on their merit, and when reviewing applications we typically look at the undergraduate and/or graduate courses taken under your qualifying degree(s). That being said, the more overlap there is between the courses you have already taken and the courses offered by Computing Science, the better chance you have of being considered a qualified applicant. Please use your best judgement based on the above, to determine if your past education demonstrates your ability to be considered a qualified applicant.
This varies for each program, so please visit each program's website for information.
Our graduate programs are focused on interdisciplinary approaches to the fine and performing arts.
MA and MFA scholars are immersed in an environment of creative experimentation.

Important Considerations for Students Applying: International students should thoroughly research the current processing times and requirements for Canadian study permits before submitting their applications. This information is essential for financial planning and for selecting an appropriate program to begin your studies in Canada.
Admission Requirements and Necessary Documents
Statement of Interest: All applicants are required to submit a written Statement of Interest as part of their application.
Reference Letters: You need to include two (2) academic letters of reference. These letters should specifically address the applicant's academic preparation and their ability to successfully undertake graduate coursework. Applicants to the PhD program should also ask the referees to comment on their ability to undertake research and their prospects to complete a doctoral thesis successfully. The referees will be emailed a link to upload their reference letters after the applicant has submitted an online application.
GRE: Applicants who have completed or are currently finishing their post-secondary education at an institution outside of Canada must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test. An unofficial copy of the GRE scores is required, and the application checklist will typically update once the official scores are received.

See MA Placement and PhD Placement.
Is there funding available for international students? A: International students, including those from the United States, can access various financial assistance options offered by the University. This includes scholarships, awards, bursaries, and the Work-Study program. You can find links to these funding sources under 'Graduate Resources' on the right side of the following webpage.
Am I qualified to apply for the Master's program in Economics if I have a background in a different field? A: The Department of Economics at Simon Fraser University offers a Master of Arts (MA) program that provides training in various theoretical, empirical, and policy-related areas. This program is designed to prepare students for careers in both the public and private sectors, as well as for further studies in a PhD program.
Your qualifications, including work experience and academic transcripts, are not just documents; they reflect your dedication and potential. It is important that you submit records that best showcase your qualifications.
In addition to the materials suggested on the SFU website, providing a broader range of relevant documentation can be essential. Your undergraduate coursework and any pertinent classes are valuable as they demonstrate your commitment and academic capabilities. These records, resulting from your hard work, will give us a comprehensive view of your interests and abilities—critical factors in our admission process.
Review the admission requirements, and begin preparing your required documents.
We recommend you apply early to ensure all aspects of the application are completed by the deadline.
PhD applicants: reach out to potential supervisors before submitting your application.

What is the difference between an MEd and MA? A: The Master of Education (MEd) program consists of coursework and a comprehensive exam (which is an extended academic paper that has an applied component).
The Master of Arts (MA) option consists of fewer courses and a research-based thesis. If you have an interest in applying for a PhD in the future, an MA is the preferred credential for admission.
Are there any scholarships available? What about for international applicants?
A: Various forms of financial assistance are available for graduate students in Education. Admission to SFU does not imply financial support. As a consequence of not being able to guarantee funding for all graduate students, the Faculty of Education stresses to all applicants, and particularly those from overseas, that they are responsible for supporting their graduate study at this institution for a minimum of two years and funding should be arranged before arriving in Canada.
Fall semester: January 15
Spring semester: June 15
Summer semester: September 15

Optional Industrial Internships
We believe that graduate students deserve the opportunity to augment their study through work experience. Through Industrial Internships, our graduate students will sharpen skills and gain experiences that increase employability upon graduation. This may be of particular interest to our course-based MEng students, who are not actively involved in research projects. In addition to affording valuable industry experience, internships reduce the amount of required in-class learning, and are an additional income-earning opportunity for our students. MASc students may apply one internship term (3 units) towards their program requirements, while MEng students may apply two internship terms (6 units) towards their program requirements.
How long does it usually take to complete your Master's programs? A: The maximum amount of time to finish the MEng program is 9 terms from the date of first enrollment in the program. The maximum amount of time to finish the MASc program is 9 terms from the date of first enrollment in the program. Note - despite these maximums, students of each program may be granted up to 6 terms of extension if they are unable to complete their program requirements in the allotted time. All extension requests must be approved by both the Engineering Science Graduate Program Committee and by SFU Graduate Studies.
Can I study part-time?
A: While none of our programs are formally categorized as part-time, the minimum required per term course enrollment is quite conservative:
- MASc students are considered full time if they enroll in any course for credit in each academic term. Note - our graduate courses have a minimum 3.0 academic credit/unit value.
- MEng students are considered full time when enrolled in 6.0 or more academic credits/units per term. Note - MEng students may elect to take take a part-time course load of 3.0 academic credits/units per term. International students, however, should review the terms of their study permit to confirm if they are allowed to take a part-time course load.

Do I need to secure a possible supervisor? A: Yes. If you are interested in applying, your first step will be to secure a potential supervisor. This is required in order to be admitted into all Geography graduate programs. Please review our faculty list to see if there is a faculty member that best matches your research interests and contact them to see whether they would be willing to supervise your research
My undergraduate/masters degree is not the required degree for admission (BA, BSc, MA, MSc). Am I still qualified to apply?
A: Your admission into a Geography graduate program will largely depend on your proposed research topic and previous experience rather than the type of degree you completed. That said, your potential supervisor and/or the admissions committee may identify a need for additional coursework if they determine your academic background to be lacking in certain necessary skills that would be needed in a Geography graduate program. You should consult your potential supervisor about this as early as possible to establish clear expectations, if they are willing to supervise you.
The Statement of Research Interest is the most important component of your application - email gero@sfu.ca for samples
Be sure to review our faculty and their research areas, and see where your current area of research interest could be compatible with a potential supervisor. If admitted to the program, it is okay for this to shift in your first year.
You should have completed at least 2-3 academic courses specifically related to aging. We offer many GERO courses at the undergraduate level that you can complete when or before applying.
Employment successes of our graduates

Start the Application Process Early
It’s important to begin the application process well in advance of the deadline. This allows you time to gather necessary documents, secure reference letters, and reach out to potential supervisors. Early application can also provide you with additional time to meet any specific requirements or address any challenges that may arise.
Connect with Potential Supervisors
Reaching out to potential supervisors before submitting your application is crucial, especially for the MSc and PhD programs. Faculty members are often looking for students whose research interests align with theirs. Establishing this connection can enhance your application and provide you with insights into the program and ongoing research opportunities. For the MPH program, this is less critical, but understanding faculty interests can still be beneficial.
Strong References and Requirements
Ensure that you have strong reference letters from at least three academic sources, preferably from individuals who can speak to your academic and professional qualifications. Reference letters should be on official letterhead and include signatures. Additionally, make sure you meet any specific program requirements, such as English language proficiency and statistics prerequisites, particularly for the MSc and PhD programs. Addressing these requirements early will help avoid delays in your application.

For MPH Applicants:
Is it possible to be exempt from submitting the credential evaluation report, or can an alternative evaluation report such as WES US be used instead of WES Canada (course-by-course report) or ICES (comprehensive report)? A: Please note that applicants who have credentials from an institution outside of Canada or the United States, as part of the supporting documents, must submit a scanned unofficial credential evaluation report from WES Canada (course-by-course report) or ICES (comprehensive report) to demonstrate that their credentials are equivalent to SFU’s 4-year bachelor’s degree in any field. The admission committee will be looking at the credential evaluation report to calculate the cgpa of applicants’ last 60 credits. This initial step is crucial in the adjudication process, no exceptions or any conditional admission will be provided for applicants to submit their credential evaluation report after the application deadline or upon admission. Credential evaluation reports other than WES Canada (course-by-course report) or ICES (comprehensive report) are not accepted.
For MSc PhD Applicants:
What if my CGPA does not meet the minimum admission requirement? A: If you do not meet the minimum admission requirements it is possible to be admitted as a conditional or qualifying admission. For details see the link.

Students should know before applying which faculty member is accepting students.
We have four different MA programs. Applicants should consider which MA stream they are applying for.
Applicants should be sure to choose their referees wisely. Referees may feel too polite to say no. So when asking for a reference, give the person a way to politely opt out. This way applicants can screen out bad references.
Our graduate program offers MA Project and MA coursework streams. Not every MA program offers this.
If students want to do an MA thesis, they have the option of enrolling into the Accelerated MA program while they are an undergraduate. This allows for a faster completion time of their Masters.
Are there any funding options available? A: MA Thesis students are offered at least $18,000 per year. MA Accelerated, Project, and Coursework funding packages vary. PhD students are offered at least $28,000 per year. All funding packages are comprised of a combination of scholarships, RAships and TAships.
What is an Accelerated MA? A: It is a program where undergraduates can work towards an MA thesis while in undergrad. It is a way for undergraduate students to do graduate coursework in their final year of undergrad. They can take up to 10 credits of graduate coursework that can go towards fulfilling requirements of BOTH their undergrad and MA Thesis. By doing this, they do not have to wait until they finish their undergrad before enrolling into the MA Thesis stream. This means finishing an MA Thesis a year earlier..

Is this a full-time program, or are there options for part-time study? A: The Master of Publishing Program (MPUB) is revising its curriculum to accommodate both full and part-time options (commencing September 2025)
What career opportunities are available to a graduate of the MPUB? A:More than forty guest publishing professionals make presentations and consult with MPUB students as part of the coursework. Industry professionals provide students with valuable contacts as well as top-notch training. Thanks to these networking opportunities, as well as an option to intern, most graduates of the Master of Publishing program (more than 300) are working throughout the book, magazine, and online publishing industries, or in associated organizations, as well as in government departments and agencies in Canada and abroad.
Very engaged alumni who return to mentor current students
Very proactive and engaged student union creates a strong sense of community
Do I need to confirm a supervisor before I apply? A: PhD applicants do need to confirm a supervisor, but MRM applicants are unlikely to secure a firm commitment in advance. Speaking to faculty and clearly indicating supervisor selection is critical.
Can I get a job with a REM degree? A: REMmers are sought after by employers across BC and around the world. REMmers work for all levels of government, private consulting agencies and NGOs helping different groups figure out how to manage the interface between human activity and natural environments. They work in resource extraction, urban planning and development, food and water supply or energy supply and management around the world.
Visit professors’ personal website to know their research interests/expertises and reach out to potential supervisors if possible before submitting your application.

When applying make sure to highlight relevant non-academic experience. Urban Studies looks for applicants with a mix of academic and practical experience connected to urban studies, including planning, policy, governance, mobility, and communities. Emphasize any research, professional experience, internships, or community work that has prepared you to engage deeply with urban issues.
We welcome applications from prospective students with a wide variety of academic and professional backgrounds. While many of our students hold an undergraduate degree in the social sciences, our student body also includes those with academic backgrounds in the humanities, sciences, engineering, architecture and fine arts. If you do not have a social science background, you should make sure to demonstrate your readiness for and understanding of our graduate program in your application materials.
The Urban Innovation Lab (URB 692) provides students with the opportunity to work directly with professional urbanists to apply their academic knowledge to projects tackling the social, cultural, and structural needs of our region. Currently this course is run in partnership with the City of New Westminster and its staff.
We train urbanists. In our Masters and Graduate Diploma programs, we aim to strike a balance between academic and professional training and to produce graduates who have the diverse and specialized skill sets, broad knowledge base and the flexibility needed to tackle today's urban challenges. Our graduates have found success in a wide array of change making roles in local government, as well as the private and non-profit sectors.
Is the Master of Urban Studies a planning degree? A: No. We don’t offer a certified planning credential and have not sought to structure our program in that way. Some of our faculty have educational, research backgrounds or professional experience in urban planning and policy, while others do not. Many of our students and graduates work as urban planners or in some planning capacity. It is possible to seek accreditation with the Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) with a Master of Urban Studies degree. Anyone who works as a non-certified planner for five years (as many of our graduates have done) may be eligible for certification through CIP's prior learning assessment recognition (PLAR) program. Some of our graduates have also become registered professional planners by seeking pre-candidate status with the PIBC.
I have a background and degree(s) in architecture, the sciences, or fine arts. Am I qualified to apply for the Master of Urban Studies degree? A: Urban Studies is an interdisciplinary field. Successful students come to Urban Studies from a variety of different academic backgrounds. However, though there is considerable room to design your own course of study, you will be asked to do at least some social science research as part of your degree. As a result, the admissions committee wants to see evidence that applicants have the proven capability to succeed in a social science-based seminar course, and interest in conducting social science-based urban research. Applicants should demonstrate to the admissions committee that they understand the nature and requirements of the MURB degree at SFU and that their path has led them to urban studies for good reason.
