Anna Appah

Anna is a goal driven lady who believes in seizing opportunities when they arise. She aspires to be an astute health policy research expert. Her graduate studies currently focuses on Molecular characterization of HIV-1 in Ghana. At the undergraduate level, Anna studied Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology and later pursued a combined teaching and research assistantship at the Biochemistry Department(University of Ghana) and West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Diseases respectively. Anna hopes to make a difference in health administration in less privileged regions by rallying together resources for these regions.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
In a nutshell, my research seeks to describe present HIV-1 subtype diversity in Ghana, identify circulating drug resistance mutations in the country and lastly predict HIV-1 coreceptor usage using an algorithm that analyses sequences in the envelope region of HIV.

I have been privileged to be awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Scholarship as well as graduate fellowships from the Health Science department and look forward to many more exciting funding opportunities.
