Archaeology master's student in the Faculty of Environment

Tell us a little about yourself, including what inspires you to learn and continue in your chosen field

I am a mature student who has wanted to be an archaeologist since I was 8 years old. The fact that I am here now, fulfilling that dream despite all that life has thrown at me, is a big motivator. In the end, though, as an archaeologist, what inspires me the most are all the people that I get to learn about and the vicarious experiences that I get to have through their stories and lived environments.

Why did you choose to come to SFU?

SFU has one of the few standalone Archaeology programs in North America.

How would you describe your research or your program to a family member?

A study of death, commemoration and heritage representation during the Klondike Gold Rush. Trying to rediscover the stories of everyday people who have been largely forgotten by time and ensure they are represented within the history that they lived and experienced.

What three (3) keywords would you use to describe your research?

Multidisciplinary, Heritage Analysis, Mortuary Studies

How have your courses, RA-ships, TA-ships, or non-academic school experiences contributed to your academic and/or professional development?

My experiences throughout my education have pushed me to be more outgoing and, importantly, to consider alternate perspectives more often, learning and engaging with patience and empathy.

How do you approach networking and building connections in and outside of your academic community?

If you are given the opportunity to do something, do it, even if it makes you uncomfortable. I wouldn't be where I am now if I hadn't taken every small opportunity along the way (clubs, field schools, volunteering, conferences, etc.) and met so many amazing new friends and colleagues.
