Tell us a little about yourself, including what inspires you to learn and continue in your chosen field

Originally from Halifax NS, I have lived across Canada and internationally both studying and working as an urban transportation planner. By centering a lens of environmental justice and social equity, my work and research has been dedicated to improving socio-environmental health and welfare. Having spent the past 5 years working as a planning consultant, I am excited to return to academia where I will be afforded the time and resources to expand my knowledge base and explore new and different ideas, while continuing to work towards bridging the gap between research and practice to bring about positive, locally relevant change.

Why did you choose to come to SFU?

I first chose to come to SFU several years ago when I enrolled in the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Sustainable Community Development. When thinking about pursuing a PhD, I remembered how impressed I was with the courses, professors, and the unique opportunities and benefits offered by the University. I also have, and continue to respect the University's dedication to fostering engagement, dialog, and innovation, as well as interdisciplinary research designed to effect meaningful change. To have been offered a PhD position in the School of Resource and Environmental Management is one that I am most thankful for and simply could not refuse.

How would you describe your research or your program to a family member?

The School of Environmental and Resource Management is an interdisciplinary school that brings together people from a mix of backgrounds that share a common goal of bringing about a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable future for people and our natural / urban environments.

What three (3) keywords would you use to describe your research?

Interdisciplinary, Engaged, Socio-environmental focused.
