"Marissa Traversa is a scholar and accomplice who prioritizes JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) in her work and research. As a colleague, she is kind and always concerned with giving space to those who deserve to be platformed. In addition to her inclusive character, her research is focused on exploring questions that deconstruct the ideas of normative western, white culture and explore ways of thinking centered on Black and Indigenous futurism and knowledge. Marissa is also an amazing person to be around! She is exactly the type of person that you'd want to work, study, and engage with."

Social Psychology master's student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

I am a Master’s student in Social Psychology studying under the supervision of Dr. Steve Wright in the Intergroup Relations and Social Justice Lab . I graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Honours Psychology and a minor in Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?

I love the West Coast's warm weather and relaxed social environment, which is quite different from my home in Toronto. SFU also provided me the opportunity to work with amazing people and exceptional supervisors.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?

My current interests include cancel culture and collective validation; social media group interactions; toxic masculinity and gender-based violence and oppression; and methodology and psychometrics. I also work as a graduate researcher on the PRISM Project within the Engendering Success in STEM Consortium.

WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?

My program feels like a community and this has enriched my learning experience.

HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
