Psychology master's student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

I'm from Markham, Ontario, and this is my first time in BC! I completed my HBSc at the University of Toronto, with a double major in criminology and psychology. When I'm not doing school work, I love to listen to music and sing. I have the pleasure of singing with an a cappella choir called VanDeca in Vancouver, which also gives me a good excuse to go down the mountain :) I also dabble in some oil painting and some digital painting as well!

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?

I was drawn to the forensic program here as it is one of the few graduate programs in forensic psychology in Canada. A professor from one of my favourite classes at UofT was an alumni here and she said that this was the best forensic program in Canada. I was also intrigued by all the different streams of research that was being conducted by the faculty.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?

I am conducting my research predominantly on the cross-race effect and its impact on lineup procedures, under the supervision of Dr. Ryan Fitzgerald in his Eyewitness Lab. The cross-race effect is the tendency for someone to be worse at recognizing faces of other races compared to faces of their own race. This phenomenon can affect everybody, but its consequences are especially detrimental if it contributes to a mistaken eyewitness identification made during a lineup because this faulty identification may subsequently lead to convicting an innocent person. I want to conduct this research to develop a deeper understanding of the cross race effect so it could inform police procedure and policy that could lower the risk of wrongful convictions.

WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?

I have the privilege of working with a very supportive and engaging supervisor who has taught me a lot about research and the field :) I've also enjoyed getting to know my cohort and hearing all about their interesting research.
