"The research level [at SFU] is top around the world, especially in computing science research area."
Zhiyun (Richard) Peng
Computing Science doctoral student in the Faculty of Applied Sciences
I am a second year Phd student in Simon Fraser University (SFU) in database and data mining laboratory.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?
When I was doing my master degree in Chongqing University, I attended a lecture given by Prof Ke Wang who is a professor in SFU and we had academic cooperation after that. Then, I came to be his Phd student.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
The research level here is top around the world, especially in computing science research area.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?
The academic atmosphere here is good. Students and teachers have a very high taste in research. Instead of agreeing to publish low-level papers to achieve a quantitative advantage, they focus on high-level research and focus on the quality of the papers. They believe that one good paper is better than ten mediocre papers.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
1. Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Graduate Fellowship
2. Helmut & Hugo Eppich Family Graduate Scholarship
3. Borden Ladner Gervais Graduate Scholarship
These awards gave me confidence and encourage me to try my best to achieve better academic performance. Also, they are good financial support for me as an international student.
