"I am grateful for the talented people I met at SFU and the great friends I made during my studies at SFU. I had a chance to learn something new every day, and that made my studies enjoyable."
Saeed Ranjbar Alvar
Engineering Science doctoral student in the Faculty of Applied Sciences
My name is Saeed Ranjbar Alvar. I am a Ph.D. candidate at the school of engineering science. I joined SFU in Spring 2017, and I am currently finalizing my thesis. Before coming to Canada, I spent two years in Ankara, Turkey, where I got my master's degree from Middle East Technical University. I received my BSc in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from University of Tabriz in Iran.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?
It was mainly due to the research topic that my supervisor, Prof. Ivan Bajic, was working on. It was sort of related to my master's thesis, at the same time, it had a lot of new aspects to explore, which was very exciting.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
Mobile devices are getting smarter these days. They communicate a lot of data with each other, and with the servers that provide services. The bandwidth to transfer data is limited. So, we need to compress the data without degrading the content. My research is on making data compression for intelligent systems more efficient.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?
I am grateful for the talented people I met at SFU and the great friends I made during my studies at SFU. I had a chance to learn something new every day, and that made my studies enjoyable.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
I am awarded Graduate Fellowship and Lang Wong Scholarship in EngSc for Fall 2021.
