Counselling Psychology master's student in the Faculty of Education

Tell us a little about yourself, including what inspires you to learn and continue in your chosen field

I am currently a MA student in the Counselling Psychology program in the Faculty of Education. My undergraduate degree was in child and youth care, and I have been working in mental health with children and families for over 5 years. I am motivated to deepen my knowledge and skills to work in ways that are responsive and caring for the communities I work with.

Why did you choose to come to SFU?

I chose to come to SFU because of my interest in both a research and practice focused program. I was excited about the opportunity to work with my current supervisor, Dr. Sharalyn Jordan. I am also looking forward to the strong focus on practical learning through the SFU Surrey Clinic and community practicum placements.

How would you describe your research or your program to a family member?

My research is focused on ways that community mental health services can be responsive and supportive for transgender youth.

What three (3) keywords would you use to describe your research?

Transgender youth, mental health care, responsive services

How have your courses, RA-ships, TA-ships, or non-academic school experiences contributed to your academic and/or professional development?

My coursework so far has challenged me to deepen and articulate the values, ethics, and theories that shape my future practice as a counsellor. I have particularly appreciated doing this learning alongside a cohort who have provided a lot of support and encouragement and also challenged me to grow academically and professionally.

Have you been the recipient of any major or donor-funded awards? If so, please tell us which ones and a little about how the awards have impacted your studies and/or research

I am grateful to have been awarded an SSHRC CGS-M for the 2024-2025 academic year. I am wanting to apply funding towards respectful and collaborative research in community. This award also provides me with financial support to focus on my studies.
