master's student in the Beedie School of Business

Hi! My name is Xueyao Cui, and I'm currently pursuing my MSc in Finance degree at the Beedie School of Business. I graduated from the University of Toronto in 2020 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Statistics. During my gap year, I worked in the real estate industry to explore my interest and then determined to further enhance my finance knowledge through this master's program at Beedie.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?

When I researched for a master's program, I noticed that SFU Beedie offers one that equips students with theoretical knowledge in investment and risk management and, more importantly, hands-on experience. For example, the Student Investment Advisory Service (SIAS) Fund allows me to participate in a fund investment and learn research and analytical skills to prepare for my future career. Also, I was attracted by the diversity of the program that studying with people from different backgrounds could inspire each other.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?

I would introduce the MSc in Finance program as a practical and pleasant studying process. We covered many fundamentals of finance like accounting, corporate finance, fixed income, derivatives and more topics in the future. Besides theories and practice, we are exposed to practical programming skills and special topics like Fintech, which further prepare us for employment opportunities. I am also having a great time learning with my cohort.

WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?

I am particularly enjoying my experience in the SIAS Canadian Equity team. Since I have been interested in the real estate industry for a long time and set it as my future career path, being an analyst in this sector fine-tunes my research, analytical and presentation skills. I appreciate this valuable hands-on experience.
