Dr. Fangxin Wang receives Dean of Graduate Studies Convocation Medal
As one of SFU's most outstanding graduate students from the Faculty of Applied Science, Dr. Fangxin Wang is recognized with the Dean of Graduate Studies Convocation Medal. On behalf of SFU, we congratulate Dr. Wang on his outstanding achievements.
Dr. Fangxin Wang’s doctoral thesis, WiFi-based Activity Recognition with Deep Learning, found that there is great potential to leverage abundantly available wireless signals to recognize people's activities. Doing so can enable a wide range of applications such as health monitoring, interactive gaming, intrusion detection, and more.
Contributing to the research communities of computer networking, particularly in the area of Internet-of-Things, edge computing, wireless sensing, multimedia networking, and deep learning, his thesis aims to develop accurate, reliable, and adaptive WiFi-based human activity recognition systems by exploring advanced deep learning techniques.
“I expect his research to inspire significant follow-on work in WiFi-based activity recognition,” says external examiner, Dr. Yanchao Zhang, Arizona State University.
In addition to receiving a perfect GPA during his studies, he also has a strong publication record, was a leader to junior scholars, and was awarded the Michael Stevenson Scholarship, the top-fellowship for international graduate students.
“Fangxin has shown extraordinary abilities in inspecting problems from practice and developing advanced models as well as systems to address real-world problems… he is among my best students, very smart and hard-working,” says his supervisor, Jiangchuan Liu.
“It is my great honor to receive the Dean’s Convocation Medal award,” says Wang.
Dr. Wang is a tenure-track assistant professor at The Chinese University of Hongkong, Shenzhen researching multimedia systems and applications, cloud and edge computing, deep learning and big data analytics, distributed network and system, and Internet-of-Things.
