About the Lecture
This seminar opens up the rhetoric and reality of Big Data: Why is big data “hot”, and where is it overblown?
Speaking from their perspectives in computer science and genomic/health communication, Fred Popowich, Peter Chow-White and Susan Erickson will outline why they are attracted to the field, applications they believe are leading edge, and key introductory issues.
What are the key concepts which need definition to bring students from many disciplines into the cloud with a common language if not thought world? What are the new trends in Computing Science that are driving changes in curriculum for students?
Peter Chow-White will sketch the major social, corporate, legal and political challenges shaping big data deployment, introducing how applications have advanced knowledge in the human genomics field, and setting up module three. What are the benefits, challenges, and risks for big data?
Susan Erickson will share the unintended consequences of the use of big data mapping in the onslaught of the Ebola crisis.
