NSERC Doctoral Scholarships

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) administers the Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral Program (CGSD) and NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships-Doctoral Program (PGSD).

Deadline to Apply:
The Fall 2024 competition is closed.
Check back in June 2025 for updates.

PGS/CGSD Award Value:
$40,000 per year for up to three years as of September 1, 2024

Candidate Eligibility:
  • Canadian citizens
  • Permanent residents of Canada

International students are not eligible to apply.

Canadian Graduate Scholarships

Students apply in one competition - the CGSD will be offered to the top-ranked applicants and the next tier of meritorious applicants will be offered a PGSD.

Selection committees evaluate each application within one of an outline list of broad discipline categories that correspond to the NSERC Scholarships and Fellowships selection committees. Please review criteria when applying.

Competition Timeline (2024)

October 1
4:30 PM
Student deadline to submit the full application on NSERC’s Online Portal. If the deadline falls on a weekend or on a federal statutory holiday, applications must be submitted before 4:30 p.m. (PST) the following business day.
November 8-9
University Scholarship Selection Committee (USSC) deadline to make final decisions
November 10-16 Students who have been selected to go forward can update their applications
November 21 FINAL SFU submission deadline
