Sensitive Habitat and Inventory Management (SHIM)

The Sensitive Habitat Inventory and Mapping Partnership (SHIM) is a community based approach to mapping aquatic habitats and their riparian areas, primarily for settlement areas of British Columbia. SHIM provides reliable, current, and spatially accurate information about local fish and wildlife habitats like this majestic example in Lynn Creek. SHIM is a 1:5,000 scale inventory and mapping project that is watershed based, building on existing local and senior government information.

The goals of SHIM are as follows:

bullet

build capacity in communities so they can undertake field surveys and manage data using geographical information systems.

bullet

promote planning for sustainable communities through informed decision making, watershed education and community involvement.

bullet

provide quick access to accurate and up to date resource information.

bullet

assist in mapping sensitive aquatic and riparian habitats in British Columbia communities.

bullet

help communities network and learn from successes and failures in SHIM mapping projects.
