Summary of Research
Margaret
Schmidt and Ken Lertzman
The vine maple project was designed to contribute to Forest Renewal
BC’s priority to restore and protect the forest environment by providing
information concerning the deciduous component of coastal conifer forests.
Potential benefits of deciduous species include promotion of biodiversity,
amelioration of forest soils, contribution to nutrient cycles, and increased
forest productivity. This project has and will continue to provide
knowledge of the important role that a unique and little-studied tree species,
vine maple, plays within forests of southwestern British Columbia.
