SFU Soil Science Research in the      Department of Geography

Soil science in the Department of Geography at Simon Fraser University offers a number of undergraduate and graduate courses. Topics include physical, chemical and biological properties of soils, soil formation, classification and mapping. The properties, processes and principles which are particularly fundamental in understanding soils are emphasized. Advanced courses and graduate research focus on forest soil science: forest soil properties, processes, soil fertility and forest soils in relation to resource management. Current research being conducted under the supervision of Dr. Margaret Schmidt, and funded by Forest Renewal British Columbia and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Resource Council, is focusing on the impact of vine maple in coastal forests, and the effects of mechanical site preparation and landing rehabilitation on soil properties and tree growth.
