Conclusion
This research effort focused on the instances of burn injury across Metropolitan Vancouver and how these instances related to socio-economic status (SES). There is a definite gap in the literature regarding the use of GIS for the analysis of burn injury.
This study accomplished the following:
- Weight different SES variables based on information derived from the 2001 Census (by using the VANDIX)
- Analyze the relationship between burn injury and SES by combining SES information for the area with the instances of burn injury
- Show that there is a higher instance of burn injuries in higher socio-economically deprived areas
- Determine that a large percentage of these burn injuries are received by males
These findings provide further motivation for burn injury prevention and awareness programs, which should include a detailed analysis of the causes and risk factors associated with burns injury. Research has shown that males have a higher tendency to be burned at work; there is an excellent opportunity to reduce the amount of burn injuries simply by improving safety standards in the work place and increasing awareness regarding burn injury and risk.
