Data Collection
The analysis required spatial and attribute data to be collected from several sources. Spatial data was gathered from SFU’s Data Warehouse, GIS Department at the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN), and Engineering Department at the City of Nanaimo.
The Dissmentation Shapefiles for Nanaimo were extracted from the BC Dissemnation Area Shapefile available in the SFU Data Warehouse.Attribute data for the socio-economic demand variables was collected from the Canadian Census Analyzer. The Analyzer was queried to provide the data for dissemination areas in Nanaimo, and the data was added into the existing Database file using Microsoft Office 2003 and Visual Basic Programming.
The Bus Route spatial data was provided by the RDN. The projection of the data had to be converted to UTM coordinates. Separate shapefiles were created for high requency(Less than 20 min), medium frequency (20-40 min), and low frequency. Zoning spatial data provided by the City of Nanaimo, and also had to re-projected with UTM coordinates. The individual zones of each land use type were then grouped, and the shapefiles dissolved to create a single polygon for each land use type. A separate shapefile was created for residential land use and high density/multifamily land use. Spatial data for road centrelines was also provided by the City of Nanaimo and required re-projection.
