Methodology

Multi-Criteria Evaluation

Multi-Criteria Evaluation (MCE) was used to find the optimal areas for Batman’s residence. The MCE is based on four main factors:

Considering that Batman’s alter ego Bruce Wayne is a billionaire, it is in best interest that he keeps his wealthy image by purchasing a property within a high class neighborhood. To locate such areas a layer composing of all the average family income per enumeration area was used. In this case the higher the average family income was the more suitable that enumeration area is.

Population density also plays a major role in the location of the Wayne Manor. Batman will have to attain as much privacy as possible in order to carry out his crime fighting duties without the chance that his real identity being revealed. Concealing his true identify is vital to a superhero for it is for their safety that evil doers do not know whom they are up against. Consequently the population density layer, which shows the population density, for each enumeration area is used to find enumeration areas with low densities.

Vancouver is a major port city and as a result, a lot of activity occurs on its coast therefore in the case of utter emergencies, Batman will need immediate access to the major waterways. So the closer he resides to these major waterways the more advantageous it will be for him.

Finally, one of the more important factors is the distance from the Downtown Eastside, where Batman will carry out majority of his nightly duties. Therefore the closer his residence is to the Downtown Eastside the more convenient it is for Batman to patrol from his own home.

Cost Distance Analysis

After the completion of the above MCE, the most favorable areas for Batman to inhabit will be evident. From these areas using cost distance analysis to calculate the optimal route for Batman to get to Downtown Eastside from the possible areas of residence. The main factor that determines where the least cost pathway will be is the road network that lies between them. Friction values will decrease as the capacity capability of the road increases.
