The Department of Geography welcomes May Farrales and Bing Lu
The Department of Geography welcomes two new faculty members - May Farrales and Bing Lu.
Farrales, an assistant professor in urban social change, is cross appointed with the Department of Gender Sexuality and Women's Studies. As an interdisciplinary scholar, her teaching and research are animated by questions of racialization, queer politics, and logics of power fundamental to colonial, empire-building, and capitalist projects.
Farrales’ current research involves examining the relationships and politics of people of colour in the racial geographies of settler colonialism.
Lu joins as an assistant professor in remote sensing of global environmental change. His research interests involve investigating global environmental change and its impacts on different ecosystems and environments using remote sensing.
Currently, Lu is monitoring and analyzing environmental changes to the Fraser River Estuary and the neighbouring coastal regions. By using remote sensing at different spatial and temporal scales, Lu aims to gain a better understand of climate patterns to support our adaption to global environmental change.
