Funding

Undergraduate students in English are eligible for a number of different scholarships, awards, and bursaries. This funding is thanks to many generous donors over the years who have created endowments to support the English department and its excellent students.

The following are travel awards available to undergraduate students.

Undergraduate Travel Award

Academic travel funding of up to $500 per request is available for SFU English undergraduate major, minor, or honours students who have not yet received their degree, or have received it no more than one calendar year before the proposed use of the funds. This funding is exclusively to offset costs incurred in the course of researching or presenting intellectual or creative work—e.g. a paper at a conference— directly related to the student's SFU English studies. Travel to exchange programs or other programs of study are not sufficient grounds for this funding.

Students submit applications by email to the Undergraduate Chair of the Department of English, in care of the Undergraduate Program Assistant (englgen@sfu.ca). The email subject line should include the name of the award, and the application must include a one-page statement which specifies the purpose of the proposed funding, and dates of travel. Supporting documentation—e.g. a letter of acceptance from conference organizers, or a program showing the applicant's name—should be included. Normally, students will be eligible for a maximum of three such awards during their undergraduate career.

While applications will be accepted year-round, awards will be made on a first-come, first-serve basis, until the available funds for that fiscal year have been exhausted.
