Funding

Undergraduate students in English are eligible for a number of different scholarships, awards, and bursaries. This funding is thanks to many generous donors over the years who have created endowments to support the English department and its excellent students.

These are scholarships and awards for which students will be nominated by the department. There is no need for students to apply for these awards.

Capi Blanchet Annual Scholarship in Fiction

Terms of Reference

The Capi Blanchet Annual Scholarship in Fiction will be granted annually on the basis of excellent academic standing to a student who has successfully completed the upper division English Creative Writing course*, no more than one academic calendar year from the time of their application for this scholarship. The student may receive it only once during their undergraduate career. The scholarship will be awarded by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee.

*Upper division English Creative Writing courses: ENGL 372, 374, and 472.

Gordon R. Elliott Award in Writing and Rhetoric

Terms of Reference

The award will be awarded annually to an undergraduate student in good academic standing who is majoring in English and is also enrolled in, and shows great promise in, the Writing and Rhetoric Certificate Program at SFU. The award will be made by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee on the nomination of the Chair, Department of English.

Paul Delany Graduation Award in English

Awarded annually to the student graduating with the highest CGPA upon completion of an English major. The award will be made by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee on the nomination of the Department of English.

Dr. Delany hopes that the recipient of the award will consider using these funds to travel to a place of literary interest.

Philippa Polson Memorial Prize in English

Terms of Reference

To a student for the best English honours essay completed during the previous three terms. Graduated students, part-time students, as well as those still completing a degree, are eligible. The selection committee, composed of the Department of English Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, will consider all essays completed during the year. The award will be made by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee on the nomination of the Chair, Department of English. When sufficient funds are available, multiple awards will be offered.

Roy Miki Award in Creative Writing

Terms of Reference

The Roy Miki Endowment Fund was established in 2013 with a generous gift from Professor Paul Matthew St. Pierre and with matching funds from the English Department and the Dean of Arts and Social Sciences. The Roy Miki Award in Creative Writing will be granted each year to the most deserving student who fulfills the following criteria: has successfully completed an English course in creative writing at SFU during the previous academic year (September through August), and is in good academic standing (minimum CGPA of 2.00). Faculty members in English teaching creative writing courses will select the award nominee and notify the Chair of the Department of English. The award will be granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee upon the nomination of the Chair of the Department of English.

Tom Grieve Honours English Program Award

Terms of Reference

The Tom Grieve Honours English Program Award will be available each year to a student who fulfills the following criteria: is enrolled in the Honours English Program in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences as a full-time undergraduate student; has completed the equivalent of at least 60 standard graded units; is in good academic standing, and has demonstrated past and present achievement and/or future promise as it pertains to the field of English. The award will be granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee upon the nomination of the Department of English's Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.
