Glossary


Here is a list of some frequently used terms and their meanings, to help you ease through your transition.


Bachelor Degree: An undergraduate degree program--usually four years long
Calendar:
A publication that contains all important dates pertinent information on admission and re-admission undergraduate and graduate programs financial assistance and course descriptions. Everything you need to know about the university is listed here.
Convocation: aka Graduation
Co-requisite: A course that is to be taken at the same time as another course.
Course timetable and exam schedule: The newspaper mailed to you a few months before the start of each semester. You need this newspaper to register by phone or online. The first few pages list important university policies and the remaining pages list the courses offered and their special codes.
Credit hour: Credit hours are assigned to each course; most courses have three credit hours.
Department: A subject area within a faculty. For example,  History is a department in the Faculty of Arts.
Deposit: The $100 deposit you pay before registering for your courses tells SFU that you intend to register and attend classes for the upcoming semester. The $100 is then put toward the cost of your total tuition and student fees for that semester.

Extended Major: The completion of the lower division requirements for a major and the upper division requirements for a minor.
Faculty: The five faculties at SFU are Applied Science,  Arts,  Business Administration,  Education and Science.
Full time student: A course load consisting of more than 9 credits.
Graduate Degree: A post-bachelor degree program.
Major: A general degree requires at least 120 credit hours and normally completion of a major program. A major program requires approximately 28-30 credit hours in upper division courses in the specified "major" subject.
Minor: The completion of 14-18 credit hours in upper division courses in the minor subject.
Office Hours: Office hours are your instructor and Tas time to meet with you about your courses or concerns. They usually set-up their office hours at the beginning of the semester so that you know when they are available to talk. Many TAs are willing to arrange appointments if you can't make it to their pre-set office hours.
Part time student: A course load consisting of less than 9 credits.
Pre-requisite: A requirement needed to register in a specific course.
Semester: It is an academic term of sixteen weeks in which you begin and complete a course. There are three regular semesters a year at SFU; this is called a tri-mester system. Each semester has its own registration and exam period.
SFSS: Simon Fraser Student Society. The SFSS provides many services on campus for students; they also advocate on student issues such as education funding and tuition.
TA: Tutor Advisor. The TA is a instructor that leads tutorial sections.
TM: Tutor Marker. The TM is the person that marks your assignments for your correspondence courses.
Tuition: It is the cost of your courses. It is calculated by the number of credit hours each of your courses has. Eg. Each basic tuition fee per credit hour is $95.10 (as of May 24,  2002). If your course is worth 3 credit hours,  you are paying $285.30 to take that course .
