COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits Available

All SFU students, faculty and staff currently attending campus in-person are eligible for a free test kit. Each test kit contains five single-use rapid tests. Tests should be used by symptomatic individuals only, in alignment with public health guidance.

Rapid tests should be considered a red light, not a green light, meaning that if you test positive you should immediately begin isolating. If you test negative but have symptoms, follow health guidance and limit contacts.

Rapid tests are another part of the many layers of protection that support the health and well-being of the SFU community. Vaccines remain the most effective way to reduce the risk of COVID-19 on campus. Everyone eligible is strongly encouraged to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

WHERE TO GET TESTS

If you are experiencing symptoms of illness, please do not come to campus to collect a test kit. Assume you are ill and stay home until your symptoms are gone.

STUDENTS  

All students currently attending in-person learning on campus are eligible for a free test kit containing five rapid tests. 

Students must present valid SFU identification in order to receive a test kit, and must be present in person to receive a test kit.

• In Burnaby, visit the SFU Bookstore in Maggie Benston Centre (MBC2100) on Monday to Friday between 10:00 am - 4:00 pm to pick up your test kit.
• In Surrey, visit Document Solutions (SRYC2590) on Monday to Friday from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, and 1:00pm - 4:00pm.
• In Vancouver, visit Harbour Centre (HC1100) on Monday to Friday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.
• Indigenous Students can access their tests through the Indigenous Student Centre.
• SFU Residence and Housing has a comprehensive testing program that will continue for students who experience symptoms and require self-isolation. Students living in Residence and Housing who are symptomatic and need to self-isolate should follow the steps outlined in Isolating in residence during COVID-19.

FACULTY AND STAFF

All full and part-time employees working in-person on campus, including frontline food service, janitorial and security contractors, are eligible for a test kit containing five rapid tests. Distribution of test kits is managed at the unit level, and supervisors can order test kits via SFU Central Stores for all members of their team. If you are an eligible faculty or staff member, please connect with your supervisor to receive your test kit and refrain from visiting a student distribution site.

WHEN TO USE TESTS

Once you have your tests, keep and use them to confirm your COVID status only when you are experiencing symptoms. Tests should be used by symptomatic individuals only, in alignment with public health guidance. They are being distributed in advance as a proactive measure to ensure students, faculty and staff have access to tests when they need them.

Visit the BCCDC website to find instructions for at-home rapid antigen tests. Be sure to follow all test kit procedures and safety precautions carefully, and please be aware of the public advisory issued by Health Canada.

TEST RESULTS

Individuals who test positive should follow the steps outlined by the BCCDC in If You Have COVID-19. Anyone who tests positive is encouraged to self-report their positive result on the BCCDC online survey. Note: a negative test result is not required to resume in-person learning, teaching or work.

Individuals who test negative should stay home, continue to monitor their symptoms, follow public health guidance and limit contacts. Anyone experiencing symptoms should stay home until their symptoms are gone or they feel well enough to resume regular activities.
