Frequently Asked Questions
Commitment: How long is the average volunteer term?
Most of our programs ask for a minimum commitment of 6 or 8 weeks (one semester), but staying with the same program for 1 year (three semesters) or longer means even more benefits and rewards!
Commitment: Do you have any short-term volunteer opportunities (less than 6 weeks)?
Yes! We have occasional one-time events, like our annual Halloween Trick or Treat event in October.
Commitment: What if I can’t volunteer anymore?
Life happens! Just let us know ASAP so we can find a replacement. No judgment!
Training: Will I get training and support as a volunteer?
Absolutely! All our programs have training. You'll also be working with a team that will support you along the way!
Location: Do you have any opportunities outside of Surrey?
Our programs are mostly located throughout Surrey; however, we have some online volunteering opportunities as well.
Requirements: Do I need relevant experience to volunteer?
Nope! Experience helps, but we welcome everyone and make it as easy as possible to join us.
Requirements: Will I need to get a Police Information Check (PIC) to volunteer?
Yes, most of our roles require a PIC (formerly known as a Criminal Record Check) because you'll be working with children, youth or vulnerable adults. We'll guide you through it!
Eligibility: Are your volunteer opportunities only for SFU undergraduate students?
Not at all! Some of our programs also welcome graduate students, alumni, students from other institutions, and members of the public. Check the eligibility requirements at the bottom of each opportunity page for details.
Eligibility: Are your paid opportunities only for SFU students?
When recruiting for our paid positions we prioritize SFU students from all degrees and levels (undergraduate, graduate, continuing studies, etc.) as well as SFU alumni.
Paid positions: What kinds of paid opportunities do you post?
Our paid positions are part-time and often involve leading a team of volunteers and running a program for children and youth. We ask for a one-year commitment, and experience with kids or volunteers is a big plus for these roles! We post most of these opportunities in July and August.
