PLAN 443 (4) Public Engagement, Mediation and Conflict Resolution in Planning
Instructor: Dr. Thomas Gunton
Time: Fridays 12:30-4:20pm (Burnaby Campus)
Prerequisites: PLAN 100/200 and 60 50+ units
In PLAN 443 you will learn about and practice different approaches to public engagement, negotiation, and mediation processes. Being able to design, manage, facilitate, and participate in public engagement and stakeholder negotiation processes are essential skills for most planners.
The course is taught by Dr. Thomas Gunton, a Professor in the School of Resource and Environmental Management. Dr. Gunton has decades of professional experience and previously worked as the Deputy Minister of Environment, Lands and Parks, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Policy Secretariat, and Deputy Minister of Finance (Treasury Board) for the Government of British Columbia. He was also the chief negotiator for the province on a number of major resource development projects including Kemano completion.

REM 350 - Energy Management for a Sustainable Climate and Society (4) [Watch course video here]

Location: Surrey Campus
An interdisciplinary approach to transforming energy systems in pursuit of sustainable climate and society. Perspectives include thermodynamics, resource potentials, technological potentials, economic evaluation, implementation of transformative public policies, political-economy assessment of policy constraints, national and sub-national governance options, behavioural change potentials, global diplomacy, and pursuit of greater equity within and between countries. Prerequisite: 45 units. Breadth-Social Sciences.
REM 355 - Sustainable Transportation Management (3) [Watch course video here]
Time: Tuesdays, 2:30 - 4:20pm
Instructor: Dr. Jonn Axsen
Location: Burnaby Campus
Explores trends in the transportation sector according to a resource and environmental management perspective, including air quality and greenhouse gas impacts. The perspective is interdisciplinary, organized around transitions to alternative fuels, efficiency and reduced vehicle use. Skills to be developed include sustainability management, lifecycle analysis and policy analysis. Prerequisite: 45 units or permission of instructor.
REM 357 - Planning for Sustainable Food Systems (3) [Watch course video here]
Time: Thursdays, 12:30 - 2:20pm
Instructor: Dr. Tammara Soma
Location: Burnaby Campus
Provides students with the tools to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the current food system and will encourage them to critically analyze diverse solutions from both the global South and global North to build a more sustainable food system. Students will work collaboratively with the instructor to examine diverse and interdisciplinary approaches to food sustainability and strengthen their problem-solving skills. Prerequisite: 45 units. Students who have taken REM 363-3 "Special Topics" in Spring 2019 and Fall 2019 may not enroll in this course for further credit.

CMPT 120 OL01 - Introduction to Computing Science and Programming I
CMPT 120 provides an elementary introduction to computing science and computer programming, and is suitable for students with little to no programming background.
Prerequisite: BC Math 12 or equivalent is recommended. Students with credit for CMPT 102, 128, 130 or 166 may not take this course for further credit. Students who have taken CMPT 125, 129, 130 or 135 first may not then take this course for further credit.
This section of the course will be taught synchronously online, which means that students must be available during the indicated class times with access to zoom. Both the midterm and final exams for the course will be held in person. Students must be available to attend.

Participants Needed for Research on Visually Guided Motor Skill Learning
We are recruiting people (age 19-35) to participate in a study looking at how adapting to altered visual information can affect motor skill learning.
We are seeking right-handed participants who are able to come into the lab two days in a row at approximately the same time.
- Day 1 ~ 1.25 hours
- Day 2 ~ 40 minutes
After each session, you will receive $10 as a thank you for your time!

How does spinal cord injury impact the relationships between breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure?
We are looking for men and women (≥19 years old), with or without a spinal cord injury (SCI) to take part in a study examining the effect of breathing patterns on cardiovascular measures.
Your participation will help improve the understanding of the SCI-associated risks of developing cardiorespiratory complications.
As a thank you for your participation, participants will receive $20.
Your participation in this study will involve…
- 1 in-lab visit (2hours) at SFU or ICORD where you will breathe at different rates, and
- 2 nights of at-home sleep testing where you will wear a vest containing sensors during sleep.
In both protocols, we will measure your breathing rate, heartbeat, and blood pressure.

Behaviour Interventionist Opportunity
Stepping Stones Consultants is an agency seeking individuals interested in working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other disorders (ADHD/ADD, ODD, GAD, etc.) in the role of a Behaviour Interventionist (BI). The successful candidate will implement a home-based therapy program under the guidance of a Board-Certified Behaviour Consultant (BC). Therapy includes working 1:1 sessions targeting play, academic, social, communication, self-management, and self-care skills.
This position is perfect for those with a background in/goals towards a career in speech-language pathology, education, psychology, social services, rehabilitation sciences, occupational therapy, and the like.
Compensation:
$15 per hour, increasing to $20 per hour after the first 3-month probationary period, with opportunities for raises every 6 months thereafter.
Qualifications:
- Energetic, punctual, patient, and interested in supporting growth in children
- At least 19 years of age
- Have strong communication and play skills
- Able to commit to the position for at least 6 months
- Having your own vehicle is an asset

Volunteer tutors and mentors needed for Indigenous K-12 students
The Indigenous Tutoring & Mentoring Program (2021 SFU Student-Community Engagement Competition Grand Award Winner) is currently seeking undergraduate students to serve as volunteer tutors/mentors. Our Program provides free tutoring, mentoring, educational resources, and education opportunities to K-12 Indigenous students in BC. Our goal is to help enact positive social change in practical and meaningful ways, by reducing the discrepancies in education rates, educational attainment rates, and federal education funding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations, highlighted by Calls to Action 7, 8, and 10 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Teaching and mentoring experience are NOT required, and you do NOT need to have strong grades, feel wise in any way, nor be Indigenous or know anything about Indigenous culture to apply (though we would certainly love to have more Indigenous tutors/mentors join our team!). We are simply looking for kind, caring people who can relate to younger students’ struggles, and can connect with them one-on-one in a genuine and honest way. If you have a big heart, are a good listener, and want to form meaningful relationships to support the personal and academic growth of Indigenous youth in our communities, please send a quick “Hi, I’m interested, tell me more!” to Indigenoustutoring@gmail.com”. We will follow up with you after the final exam period, and we will give you the tools and support to make a positive impact.
For example, you will receive tutor/mentor training from Dr. Kevin Lam (an SFU Excellence in Teaching Award winner, and Healthy Campus Community Champion), and Indigenous Knowledges training from an SFU Indigenous Scholar (TBD). Kevin will also be available anytime you have questions (via phone/text/email), and will check in with you every couple of months to provide support and advice, and to learn from your experiences, too.
After training, we’ll carefully match you with students whose grades and subjects you can easily handle, and you can then flexibly meet with each student 1-2 hours per week (online or in person), at whatever time works best for you and your student(s). You’re also welcome to take on as many/few students as you like: even if you only have time to pair with one student, those 1-2 hours that you spend with them each week can make a big difference (and you will receive credit on your co-curricular record for taking part)!

Physician Quality Improvement team at Fraser Health: Volunteer Opportunity
For the eighth year, the Physician Quality Improvement (PQI) team at Fraser Health is happy to offer the opportunity for SFU students to volunteer with physicians working on Quality Improvement projects. PQI is a provincial initiative funded by Doctors of BC, which aims to engage physicians with quality improvement and leadership skills. Physicians attend monthly training sessions and receive full support to implement a QI project of their choice.
We hope to continue expanding on the volunteer positions available and have as many passionate SFU students involved as possible. Involvement includes exposure to QI and leadership training through invitations to workshops, exposure to the “real healthcare world” through hands-on work with data entry, analysis, and site audits, as well as opportunities to collaborate with medical professionals, patient partners and project coordinators working at the corporate level.
Project examples volunteers have worked on include:
- Improving hospital experience for patients with delirium
- Reducing wait times for patients referred to a specialised senior’s clinic
- Improving timely access to pain clinic resources
- Improving sepsis management
- Reducing length of stay for vascular wound patients

Mountain Biking Video Analysis Volunteer Opportunity
The SFU Injury Prevention and Mobility Lab (IPML) is looking for volunteers to work on a new study examining the mechanics of falls in mountain biking. Volunteers will review video footage of real-life falls in mountain biking to classify the circumstances of these events.

Community Health Centre Volunteer Recruitment
REACH is a community health centre located in the Grandview-Woodlands community for over 50 years and strives to be more than a doctor’s office by having an in house pharmacy, dental clinic, multicultural family centre, Urgent and Primary Care centre, and community outreach.
