About Dr. Wieman

Cornelia (Nel) Wieman, Anishinaabe (Little Grand Rapids First Nation, Manitoba), is the Acting Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the First Nations Health Authority and has served as the President of the Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada (IPAC) since 2016. Dr. Weiman’s specializations include COVID-19 Response, Vaccine Confidence, Mental Health and Wellness, Addictions, Trauma-Informed Practice, Cannabis, Communications and Wellness Initiatives. Registration Registration is required.

Register for the IEA2021 Virtual Congress

The International Ergonomics Association's Triennial Congress has moved ONLINE.  The event will be held June 13-18, 2021 and offers flexibility to participants by providing access to recorded sessions on an on-demand basis for 30 days from the start of the Congress.

With a technical program that comprises over 250 sessions, workshops and panels with the addition of renowned keynote speakers, students can learn about the latest advances in human factors and ergonomics research.  The current rate for students to join this 5-day conference is $125.  Effective May 10th 2021, registration fees will increase by $100 - make sure to register beforehand! Every three years, scientists, practitioners, students and other professionals from around the globe meet to address key ergonomic issues.  The ultimate goal is to elaborate and advance ergonomics science and practice, and extend this knowledge to relevant fields and professions which are not limited to healthcare, workplace safety, design, architecture and engineering.  The theme of the congress is Human Factors and Ergonomics in a Connected World, L’ergonomie 4.0, which speaks to the role of emerging G5 technologies to human applications at work and play.

Brain and Music Symposium

Spaceflight: Bad to the Bone with Dr. Leigh Gabel [Webinar]

Dr. Gabel will share findings from the recently completed University of Calgary TBone study, funded by the Canadian Space Agency. TBone followed 17 astronauts before and after 6-month missions to the International Space Station. Despite daily exercise, astronauts returned to Earth with the equivalent of nearly 2 decades worth of bone loss. TBone examined predictors of bone loss, including mission duration and pre-flight measures such as biomarkers of bone turnover and exercise habits. Findings from TBone are also relevant to the bone health of Earth-bound folks, as unloading in microgravity helps us understand bone loss due to injury, disuse and aging.

Consulate General of Japan: Application for the 2022 MEXT Research Student Scholarship is Now Open!

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan is currently accepting applications for the 2022 Research Student Scholarship for students who wish to study at Japanese universities as research or post-graduate students.

The scholarship covers:

  1. Full tuition
  2. Monthly allowance 
  3. Round-trip flight between Japan and Canada

The Research Student Scholarship is aimed at university graduates, born on or after April 2, 1987 (for the 2022 scholarship year). The area of research or post-grad study should be in the same or related field that the applicant has previously studied.

Application guides and forms are available through the links on the Consulate General of Japan website: https://www.vancouver.ca.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_en/mext_en.html. Application deadline for the 2022 scholarship year: May 12, 2021.

Applicants who successfully pass the written application screening are required to undertake an interview and examination (English and Japanese language) to be held in late June/early July 2021. Due to COVID-19, the process for the interviews and examinations will be announced at a later date. Normally, interviews and examinations must be conducted in-person at the Consulate General of Japan's offices. Please note that fluency in Japanese is not necessarily required, but dependent on the nature of the university and study program as selected by the scholarship candidate.

Terry Fox Gold Medal

Financial Aid and Awards is currently accepting applications for the Terry Fox Gold Medal. The application deadline is Friday, May 7th.

The award is granted to a student who has demonstrated courage in the face of adversity and possesses qualities becoming of a role model.

Terry Fox Gold Medal Terms of Reference
Awarded to a student who has demonstrated those personal qualities of courage in adversity and dedication to society which have been exemplified by Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope.
What does this statement mean?
"Courage in adversity" - someone who has shown courage in dealing with a life threatening disease or a significant disability.
"Dedication to society" - that person described above who has gone on to help other people in similar situations, and serve as a role model for those people.
The application/nomination should include appropriate supporting documentation - cover letter and reference letter(s).
This award includes $5,000, a Terry Fox Medal, and a plaque.

Doctoral Student Position Available

A doctoral student position is available in Dr. David Wright’s laboratory in the Department of Human, Health and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Guelph starting in the Fall 2021 or Winter 2022. Dr. Wright’s laboratory is funded by NSERC and CIHR and examines the impact of exercise, diet and pharmaceutical interventions on adipose tissue, muscle and liver metabolism and how this impacts systemic carbohydrate and lipid homeostasis. A particular area of interest is how exercise, and exercise-activated pathways can be used to offset the metabolic side effects of antipsychotic medications. Stipends are competitive and guaranteed for four years and there is the opportunity for an international research placement. Graduate (MSc) student position in wearable technology

In collaboration with FORM, a Vancouver-based wearable technology company that manufactures augmented reality swim goggles, the Clarke Lab for Quantitative Exercise Biology is recruiting a Masters student for a funded research project to evaluate the effectiveness of the goggles for enhancing the training of fitness swimmers. Behaviour Interventionist

We are seeking individuals interested in working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other disorders (ADHD/ADD, ODD, GAD, etc.) in the role of a Behaviour Interventionist (BI). The successful candidate will implement a home-based therapy program under the guidance of a Behaviour Consultant (BC). Therapy includes working 1:1 sessions targeting play, academic, social, communication, self-management, and self-care skills.

This position is perfect for those with a background in/goals towards a career in speech-language pathology, education, psychology, social services, rehabilitation sciences, and the like.

Location: North Burnaby
Looking for a BI for a 3-year-old boy diagnosed with ASD to implement 3-4 ABA home sessions and preschool sessions starting in September 2021. Sessions at home are 1 hour, while preschool will be around 3-4 hours including travel time. At home sessions occur during the morning, day or are after school hours, and the family is flexible with the days. Current goals are using his words to communicate his needs and maintaining engagement during play.

Additional positions are available also in Burnaby, if you are interested in supporting more families, feel free to reach out as well.

Compensation:
Between $15-$30 per hour with opportunities for raises every 3-6 month period.

Qualifications:
- Energetic, punctual, patient, and interested in supporting growth in children
- At least 19 years of age
- Have strong communication and play skills
- Able to commit to the position for at least 6 months
- Having your own vehicle is an asset
