M.H.Sc. Medical Genomics - Info Session

Genomics, the reading and interpreting of information contained within DNA, is a rapidly growing area with far-reaching implications from the laboratory bench to the patient's bedside. To address the evolving implications of genetics and genomics in medicine, the Molecular Genetics Department at The University of Toronto offers a professional Master of Health Science program in Medical Genomics. This program is the first of its kind in Canada, and on behalf of the MedGen Team, we would like to invite you to join us for an information session and networking event! 

If you are an enthusiastic and engaged student with a clinical or B.Sc. background, and you're interested in pursuing a career in medical genomics, please join us on April 6th, 2021 from 5:00-6:30PM EST to learn more about this innovative program. You will have the opportunity to meet and ask questions to the core teaching faculty and current students in the program, and to find out if UofT's Medical Genomics program is a good fit for you.

11th Annual BPK Research Day

The 11th Annual BPK Research Day will be held virtually on Friday April 9th, 2021 from 9:00 – 16:30 PST through Airmeet and SpatialChat. Be sure to register via the Airmeet!

The full agenda for Research Day is now posted on the BPK Event page. There will be an awards ceremony/social from 15:45 - 16:30 PST, followed by a virtual evening event at 19:00 PST to celebrate and wrap up our Spring 2021 semester.

Research Day is an opportunity to showcase the excellent research in our Department. All trainees involved in research within BPK, either at the post-doctoral, graduate, or undergraduate level (honours thesis, directed studies, URSA, co-op, etc.) are encouraged to participate. Sessions include: oral presentations, three-minute thesis competition (3MT), poster competition, and science communication contests (e.g. trainee image contest, UpGoer challenge).

Two competitions are still accepting submissions: Science Communication Contest and 3-Minute Thesis (3MT). The submission deadline for these events is April 6th at 5:00pm. You do not have to submit an abstract for either competition. Details for both competitions can be found on the BPK Event page. If you’re interested in participating, please contact the event coordinators.

Attention: Elective Grade System (P/CR/NC) option

On January 11, our University Senate approved a new, temporary undergraduate Elective Grade System of Pass/Credit/No Credit (P/CR/NC) for the 2021 - spring, summer, and fall terms. This Elective Grade System was created specifically for general elective courses.

For Biomedical Physiology majors - this means that this is only an option for the courses that fulfill the following:

GENERAL ELECTIVES and WQB: 16 units of lower or upper division electives, and 3 units of upper division from any dept.

For Kinesiology majors - this means that this is only an option for the courses that fulfill the following:

Active Health & Rehab. concentration - GENERAL ELECTIVES, WQB AND CCUPEKA: 18 units of lower or upper division electives, and 3 units of upper division from any dept/discipline 

General program - GENERAL ELECTIVES AND WQB: 24 units of lower or upper division electives, and 3 units of upper division from any dept/discipline 

For Behavioural Neuroscience majors - this means that this is only an option for the courses that fulfill the following:

GENERAL ELECTIVES and WQB: 16 units of lower or upper division electives, and 3 units of upper division from any dept/discipline 

Please note that for a course to satisfy the WQB requirement, a P is required, a CR can count towards general electives.

Graduation Checks
For a graduation check, please complete the following steps: 

  1. Compare your advising transcript with the checklists found on the BPK website here. The advising transcript only counts completed courses.
  2. If you are declared into any KIN or BIF or BNEU major program, the Academic Progress Report (APR) on goSFU is a fairly accurate tool for most students. Use this tool to cross reference/cross check/double check with your transcript and checklist. The APR assumes completion of all enrolled courses.  (PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN BPK 301/407, YOU WILL NEED TO COUNT BPK 409 IN PLACE OF BPK 301/407, THE REPORT MAY NOT PICK THAT UP AUTOMATICALLY, ONCE USED TO SATISFY THIS REQUIREMENT, IT CANNOT BE USED SOMEWHERE ELSE ALSO.)
  3. After completing the two steps above, if you have additional questions, I am happy to see you for an advising appointment.

Graduation Applications
June 2021 Convocation Applicants

If Spring 2021 is your last term, you can apply for graduation now. If Summer 2021 is your last term, you would apply in May. You would apply for graduation assuming completion of all programs/courses you're currently enrolled into. At the end of the term, your application will be reviewed.

For instructions and deadlines, click here. You can see your graduation application status in goSFU under the following: "main menu" button on the top left under the SFU logo. Main Menu > SIS > Self Service > Graduation Convocation > Grad Application Status

For Spring 2021 applicants: after you apply, your graduation application status will remain "In Review" until around mid-May. Your application will be reviewed at the end of term (April). Students can access their Credential Completion Letter once the graduation application status changes to "Approved".

Registered in a Spring course or program that has a 'work integrated learning' component? you may be eligible for a grant and PD opportunity valued at $1000! SFU Service Awards Medal applications open

Every year, Financial Aid and Awards accepts applications for the SFU Service Awards. The SFU Service Awards recognize outstanding unpaid service to the University community and/or the community at large, leadership and volunteer work. These awards are available to SFU undergraduate students, but the B.C. Sugar Achievement Award is also available to SFU Faculty members. Financial Aid and Awards is currently accepting applications for: the Terry Fox Gold Medal, recognizing qualities of courage in adversity and dedication to society (deadline May 7), and the BC Sugar Achievement Award, recognizing recipients of a national or international award/competition (deadline April 16). Tandem Language Exchange Program - Summer 2021 Session

Want to improve your Arabic? Your English? Your French? Your Cantonese? Or any other  language? “Tandem” is a method of language learning that pairs up two  people who want to learn each others’ languages. Learn French while teaching Spanish, or improve your English while helping someone  improve their Mandarin. SFU Tandem will pair you with someone on campus  while facilitating casual language learning and conversation sessions!

Brain Health Symposium - Call For Abstracts

Submissions for abstracts are open for the 2021 Virtual Brain Health Symposium hosted by University of British Columbia's Physical Activity for Precision Health Cluster. The symposium will bring together internationally renowned experts to share knowledge on various lifestyle strategies for promoting cognitive and brain health. 

Eligibilty:

  • Trainee of any level (i.e. undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral fellows)
  • Projects that are currently in progress are welcome

Presenters will have the opportunity to receive feedback from and connect with experts of the field. Prizes will be awarded to top trainee presenters!
The deadline to submit an abstract is April 16, 2021 at 11:59 PM PDT.

Association of Canadian Ergonomists Contest for Undergraduate Students

The Association of Canadian Ergonomists (ACE) would like to invite students enrolled at a Canadian university or college to compete in the ACE IEA2021 Contest. 

The contest involves submitting a short description of an interesting example of well or poorly applied ergonomics principles in everyday life. Winners will be selected from separate undergraduate and graduate categories and will receive free registration ($125 value) for the International Ergonomics Association (IEA) 2021 virtual conference that is held in June. Undergraduate winners will also receive a free one-year ACE student membership. Entries must be submitted by April 19th 2021.
