Grade 5

Do you teach Core French 5 or have students who are learning French for the first time? The units on this page are designed to build a strong foundation for students to gradually develop their French language skills. While these units align with the Core French Grade 5 curriculum, they are also suitable for students with limited exposure to French. Feel free to adapt the lessons to meet your students’ needs. Unit 1 : Je peux rencontrer des nouvelles personnes, me présenter et exprimer comment je me sens - I can meet new people, introduce myself, and explain how I feel.

Unit description:

In this introductory unit, students will learn how to greet someone and say good-bye in different ways. They will learn to introduce themselves and use the zones of regulation emotions to express how they feel. By the end of the unit, students will be able to introduce their new Francophone friend to their friends.

Unit objectives: 

  • Je peux saluer quelqu’un. I can greet someone. 
  • Je peux me présenter. I can introduce myself.
  • Je peux dire comment je me sens et exprimer mes émotions. I can say how I am feeling and express my emotions.

Unit 2: Qui suis-je? Je peux partager des informations sur moi-même. – Who am I? I can share some information about myself. *The published unit may include some adaptations.

Unit description:

In this unit, students share some basic information about themselves. By the end of the unit, students will fill out an identity card in French incorporating all the information they've learned.

Unit objectives:

  • Je peux partager des informations sur moi-même (épeler mon nom, mon âge, ma fête). I can share information about myself (spell my name, age, birthday).
  • Je peux compter jusqu’à 31.  I can count to 31.
  • Je peux dire les mois de l'année. I can say the months of the year.
  • Je peux dire les lettres de l’alphabet.  I can say the letters of the alphabet.

Unit 3: Mon style personnel! Je peux expliquer ce que je porte. – My personal style! I can explain what I wear.

Unit description :

In this unit, students will discuss their clothing preferences and what they like or dislike to wear. They will learn to describe the colors of different clothing items. By the end of the unit, students will participate in a fashion show and explain what they are packing for a trip, reflecting their personal style.

Unit objectives :

  • Je peux parler des vêtements que je porte. I can talk about the clothing that I wear.
  • Je peux décrire la couleur des vêtements que je porte. I can describe the colour(s) of the clothing that I wear. 
  • Je peux expliquer ce que j’emballe pour un voyage. I can explain what I pack for a trip.

Unit 4: Parlons de moi! Je peux communiquer ce que j’aime ou je n’aime pas faire ou jouer. – Let’s talk about me! I can communicate about what I like or don’t like to do or play.

Unit description :

In this unit, students will talk about the activities they enjoy and those they don’t. By the end of the unit, they will either write a digital story featuring two people discussing their favorite and least favorite activities, or create and explain a collage of their activity preferences.ep

Unit objectives :

  • Je peux expliquer ce que j’aime faire. I can explain what I like to do.
  • Je peux expliquer ce que j’aime jouer. I can explain what I like to play.
  • Je peux expliquer ce que je n’aime pas faire. I can explain what I don’t like to do.
  • Je peux expliquer ce que je n’aime pas jouer. I can explain what I don’t like to play.
