Backpackers Tasks

In this assignment, the function you are to accommodate has three parts

A social dining space in which a number of hungry backpackers might enjoy a social meal. You might think of this space as a "served" or primary space. This space must to be "sheltered" so that it can function under all weather conditions.

A sleeping space for backpackers, consisting of a sheltered area of floor suitable for the use of sleeping bags or hammocks.

A connecting space. Its purpose is to support several kinds of connection. It is to be a physical and visual connection between the social dining space and the sleeping space. It should provide places which people can use to connect to each other. It should provide the opportunity for connection to the landscape.

The dining space is to be approximately 90 square meters in area. The sleeping space is to be approximately 90 square meters in area. The connecting space has no specified size, but its physical realisation should be modest in comparison with the other two spaces.

Feeling. Being in a place can evoke in us some very complex feelings. Some of these may be anticipated by the designer of the place, others we, as occupants of a place, construct ourselves.

In this assignment, you are to aim at either of two feelings for your place: introspective or expansive. An introspective place helps us to focus mostly on what is happening in the space, in this case the enjoyment of other people's company. An expansive place allows us a similar focus, but also gives an alternative focus towards the larger world around the place.

Architectural Language. The idea of an architectural language (or just "language") is central to much discourse in the discipline. It is a term for which you gain an appreciation over time but is based on a simple idea. A language is essentially a way of making a form. If you make a form by carving into a solid object, you will tend to create objects that have a similar character and one quite different from objects created by putting sticks & panels together. There are many architectural languages--in some ways the process of learning about designing architecture can be seen as developing a knowledge of many architectural languages (including ones you invent!) and the wisdom of when and how to use them.

In this assignment you are to use a language based upon the Light / House, Troppo Pavilion.
