White Glacier, Axel Helberg Island, April-May 2017
SFU Postdoctoral Fellow Laura Thomson returned to White Glacier (Axel Helberg Island, Canadian High Arctic) for the annual spring field season, accompanied by Luke Copland (University of Ottawa), Miles Eccelestone (Trent University) and Gwenn Flowers (SFU). In addition to making winter balance measurements, the team serviced GPS and meteorological stations, and collected high- and low-frequency ground/ice-penetrating radar data. Laura built and installed three thermistor cables to measure ice/firn temperatures at sites with historical data. Using these data, along with a thermo-mechanically coupled ice-flow model, Laura is investigating the thermal response of this High Arctic glacier to historical and recent climate conditions.
