Immigration
Studying in Canada
What do I need to do if I am planning a trip outside of Canada?
You must ensure that you have a valid passport and a valid immigration travel document (ie. Temporary Resident Visa/TRV for visa-required countries or Electronic Travel Authorization/eTA for visa-exempt countries), unless exempted, so that you can travel back to Canada and seek re-entry. To review if you need a TRV or eTA to travel back to Canada, please visit the IRCC website.
If your TRV or eTA is near its expiry, you should apply for a new one from within Canada ahead of time before you plan your trip. To review how to apply from within Canada, please visit:
- TRV Renewal: Handout | Instruction Guide
- eTA Renewal
It will also be important that your study permit is valid for your return if you wish to study upon returning to Canada.
