Studying in Canada
I am a transfer student. What do I need to do?
POST-SECONDARY TRANSFER STUDENTS
You must log in to your IRCC secure account and notify IRCC that you have transferred to SFU from your previous institution before you begin your studies at SFU. This process is called the "Designated Learning Institution" Transfer (or DLI transfer). This is required each time you transfer between institutions in Canada.
Instructions for the DLI Transfer process can be found on the IRCC website.
If your study permit will soon expire, in addition to the process above you must also apply to extend it before the expiry date. Visit the extend your study permit section of our website for instructions on how to extend your status.
HIGH SCHOOL TRANSFER STUDENTS
You may continue using your study permit when you transfer to SFU as long as it is valid. If it is nearing its expiry, you must extend your study permit before it expires.
If you would like to work on or off campus during your SFU studies, you will need to change your study permit conditions. See High School Students in Canada: Change Conditions for information on this process.
